If no-one at the time understood what "STENDEC" meant, then it must have been a mis-keying of something else.Andrew Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17073306343984931484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012179240296572398.post-76383598670670899742014-03-11T11:42:03.471+00:002014-03-11T11:42:03.471+00:00As an ex military & civilian radio operator I ...As an ex military & civilian radio operator I can only make a couple of observations:-

'Stendec' has no meaning in morse code. At all. I doubt it had any meaning in 1947 as by then a wide range of 3 letter 'Q' codes sometimes supplemented by letters or numbers, were widely used throughout the world and many of these were developed for aircraft use. (For example QRE 1200z means I'm arriving at 1200z (Greenwich Mean Time).

Was STENDEC ever a war time code?? No! Since 1947 countless investigations have never identified as a code meaning "severe turbulance Encountered Now Descending Expecting Crash" If it had been a code someone from the investigating team then (and since) would have pointed this out!!.

I haven't a clue what 'STENDEC' was meant to be. Nor did the Chilean operator, nor did any of the investigators at the time know.David Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08820865982786898527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012179240296572398.post-595392941457534362012-07-15T10:20:28.357+01:002012-07-15T10:20:28.357+01:00David - Thanks very much for sharing this. I have to admit that when I mentioned the National Archives, it crossed my mind that you were the very man for the job!Andrew Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17073306343984931484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012179240296572398.post-40192953411270442362012-07-15T10:05:05.208+01:002012-07-15T10:05:05.208+01:00Hi Andrew

It contains quite a lot of papers (dating from 1947-55) and discussion of the meaning of the 'Stendec' transmission. The conclusion is 'a solution to the word Stendec has not been found', although there is no evidence in the file that inquiries were made with the Royal Air Force at the time. It remains a possibility, but again some shoe-leather is needed to check it out.
Dave ClarkeDave Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17811372009688882929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012179240296572398.post-89582177054114186942012-07-09T22:01:44.369+01:002012-07-09T22:01:44.369+01:00I'm sorry you feel that way. You're right ...I'm sorry you feel that way. You're right that the post doesn't explain the basic mystery or the various theories in the detail that a newcomer to the subject would expect. The Wikipedia article is an excellent place to start for that. I wanted to make a point about the psychology of people who've looked at the mystery over the last ten years or so, which you can call a rant if you like -- a lot of my posts are rants. I treat this blog as a personal forum, not a public one, and I consider anyone such as yourself who posts a comment to be a friend - hence I ask the small commitment that people should log in rather than being able to leave anonymous posts which have often been very rude and unhelpful in the past. But yours I take as a valid and constructive criticism.Andrew Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17073306343984931484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012179240296572398.post-59794917458978370452012-07-09T20:02:14.953+01:002012-07-09T20:02:14.953+01:00I came here from the anomalist, expecting a seriou...I came here from the anomalist, expecting a serious article about a case I'd never heard of before.

I'm disappointed, this is just a rant and would be considered flame-bait in most forums. Was it a hoax? Was "stendec" a WW2 code? It seems you didn't bother to research this matter yourself.

Also it's annoying that I had to login to post this comment. It's no wonder most of your articles have 0 comments.Scheletro Gentiluomohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09379775405747258571noreply@blogger.com
